I never played the third one, so I wouldn't know about that. I never played the second one either. This is because the first one was baaaaaaad :/
I didn't like it because I felt that the lore was far too imersive for the story. I remember that the "mass effect" has to do with a newly discovered element with a negative mass, that the firearms use it to launch extremely small slivers of metal (which is why guns rarely need to be reloaded), that Turians need dextroproteins (unlike humans that need levoproteins), that Krogans have many duplicate organs, that ships need to discharge excess electrical charge on planets with a strong electromagnetic field, that energy shields only work on objects travelling above a certain speed and apparently can also ignore the fact that KE=M*V^2 ...
... But I can't for the life of me remember what I did or why I was supposed to care It was something about being a secret agent who has carte blanche to do whatever needs to be done to protect the universe, and using that power to track down a fellow secret agent and murder him in cold blood for having the audacity to do that very thing, and something about evil spaceships which farm life forms for technology based on some superstition that evolution necessarily leads to rockets and space travel.
I would have loved it as a book series, but sadly, Mass Effect wasn't, and it suffers for it.
